Risk of heart problems from dopamine agonists

A prolactinoma is a benign tumour (adenoma) of the pituitary gland that produces a hormone called prolactin. Symptoms of prolactinoma are caused by too much prolactin in the blood (hyperprolactinemia) or by pressure effects of the adenoma on surrounding tissues.

I just had my echocardiogram ahead of starting on cabergoline (Dostinex). I now have to wait a week or so before my GP will receive the full report, but the echo technician seemed to do a pretty thorough scan this time.

I don't remember having to get into quite as strange a position as this before, but I was on my left side, hanging on to a handle with my right hand, while the echo technician had me in strange semi-embrace for 15 minutes as she reached across my torso to my heart.

But it painless of course, so pretty easy. I'll know if my heart valves are in good enough shape for cabergoline in a week or so. They recommend periodic checks too while on the drug, so I am expected to prod my GP from time to time to get checked again.
