Bit of embarrassing question about enemas

Addison's disease occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough of the hormone cortisol and, in some cases, the hormone aldosterone. The disease is also called adrenal insufficiency, or hypocortisolism.

Bit of embarrassing question about enemas

Okay, here it is. Anyone else get sick after using just a tap water enema and the body flushing itself?

I know it's a stimulant. How hard are any kind of stimulants on people with Addison's?

And, question about colonoscopy and prep. Had one two weeks ago, and the gastro said I didn't need to stress dose. I got very sick beforehand: pounding head, just felt like I had the worse case of flu in my life. Couldn't wait to be put to sleep just so I wouldn't have to feel bad anymore.

Then, I read in the Addison's Manual that you're supposed to be put in the hospital the day before and stress dosed. That makes me mad that my doctor said he had plenty of Addison's patients (I really doubt that) and he's never had any of them stress dose and they've all been fine. Actually, I did well afterwards, it was just before.

So, is the stress dosing more because of the prep or the procedure? It seems the prep is what made me sick.

Thanks.

Hi LindaJoy,

For what it is worth, I ws put on a double dose of H/C for a week prior to and a week post op for a simple cateract op. I recently got out of hospital after oral surgery and had to be given huge doses of H/C by injection. An Addison's crisis saw me stay in hospital longer than intended. The anaesthatist tellls me that I gave him a few scares turning blue twice and I have to go back so that they can complete the op. I feel that had I trusted my own instincts and listened to my own body and raised the dose accoedingly meself, that I would not have had these problems. Taking too much H/C over long periods may have some harmful effects. Not taling enough over very short periods has the potential to be fatal.

I am not qualified to give medical advice.

Hope this helps,

Paul

I had a colonoscopy in May and I didn't stress dose at all. My doc. did give me a special kind of prep that helped me not to dehydrate so much. Sorry, can't remember the name of the prep.
