What to eat when you have nausea?

Postby Vlal » 19 Jan 2010, 14:25

The title is pretty self explanatory. What do you recommend eating when you have nausea or are off your food?

So far I have been given rich tea biscuits (blurgh... that didn't go down), plain toast (managed about 4 bites of that - white toast is better than brown it seems as I managed a whole slice of white yesterday and the brown stuff today is not going down well), soup (depends on variety - I managed some vegetable mixture and minestrone proved ok)...

I am not normally one to have no appetite at all... it's quite novel really. I did once lose half a stone by just eating rich tea biscuits when I had a stomach bug... shame that weight lost in this manner seems to go straight back on when you eat normally again.

I have been taking ginger tablets - miraculous little things and they are helping with my energy too.

V-L,

Bland food is best. Milk is sometimes good with nausea but sometimes the worst thing you could have!

Have you ever tried domperidone (Motilium)? It works well with the nausea that comes with a migraine. However, I should warn that, although you can now buy it over the counter at the chemists, it shoves things along a bit (moving them out of your stomach) and means you metabolise some drugs quicker than you should. Also, it's a dopamine antagonist, albeit a weakish one, so if your prolactin levels are high it might not be a good idea.

Last time I bought Motilum I was also buying paracetamol and codeine and the pharmacist didn't want to sell them all to me -- but relented when I said that I had a migraine NOW and that they were exactly what the doctor had prescribed me. (For migraine your gut processing slows down, so the accelerative power of Motilium comes in useful so that the codeine can actually work).

Have you tried ginger biscuits as a change from the rich tea?

Oh Ginger Biscuits - GOOD PLAN!! Why didn't I think of that. :?

Hmmm never heard of Motilium sounds interesting. I shall have to look it up now. I do get migraines so that sounds like something I might be good for... hehe.

I managed to eat a jacket potato with a tiny smidge of butter and some vegetables and a vegetarian sausage... how exciting. I feel sick now though so that was half a success. I am not used to feeling sick... normally I am the kind of person where if I get a stomach upset it just sits in my gut and brews and nothing happens either end... unlike some other members of my family ;). I actually prefer to be sick and get it out! I can remember the last time I was sick which was when I was about 20. :geek: That's the rarity of the event!

Yep, I agree, Ginger Biscuits are ideal.
They really do work a treat - I've tried about four different packets (not all in one sitting ;) ) and they all work equally well.

There is a suppliment food available on prescription called Ensure+. It is designed for people with a lacl of appetite and is a complete food you can live on.

I find it easy to drink and in fact is the only food to have passed my lips for months.

Vanilla flavour is best!
