Pharmicist Error- 10X overdoseage of Levothyroxine

Postby Reflection » 09 Mar 2010, 19:55

I posted this in response in the below topic but thought that maybe it deserved its own topic header

So, I had my six week test run for TSH and free T4. I don't have the actual figures as I just got a call from my GP. Seems that the pharmicist moved a decimal point and I have been getting 10X the doseage then the doctor prescribed. Oppss sorry that is for Levothyroxine. Since I my TSH wasn't high and only my T4 was low the prescription was supposed to be for 12.5 not 125! UGG....So that is why I have been experiencing a rapid heart rate and high blood pressure for the last couple of weeks. He tried to say that was causing ALL my symptoms. However, I explained to him that I have had the same symptoms, except the rapid heart rate and high BP, prior to taking ANY levo. So, he is running a gammet of hormone tests and also going to schedule me an MRI. Said that the MRI is going to be a tough one with my insurance but will fight for me. I the other labs order will be faxed to the hospital and I can stop in and get them ran tomorrow.

So, the bottom point is I am still suffering. Brain Fog, facial numbness, super fatigue, no weight loss (even being super hyper), some consitipation (some improvement since being on levo), breast tenderness (oh yeah, he said my prolactin was normal, will ask for a copy when I actually visit him). ETC...the list goes on.

I feel like I have taken a huge step backwards in finding out what is going on. Since the overdoseage is this going to screw up the results of the other hormone tests??? So confused...and still just want answers...Thanks for listening to me.

Um, shouldn't the pharmacist have liability insurance for such cases?

Sorry to have heard that you have suffered due to this!

In the UK is is actually a *criminal* offence for a pharmacist to misdispense drugs. The pharmacist can be arrested by the police. While this may seem a little harsh, and in practice the jails are hardly full of pharmacists, this is the very reason that it is a criminal offence. It also explains the profuse apologies once when the I took my prescription bag back to the pharmacy with a box of 16-mg oills and a box of 32 mg ones.

As you can imagine, the pharmacists would prefer the law to be changed.
